Range Rover Crossover and next-gen Range Rover - more details out
New details of the upcoming next-gen Range Rover and the new Range Rover Crossover, earlier touted as the Road Rover, are emerging. While the former is said to be better positioned in the line-up to rival the Bentley Bentayga, the latter will be the sleekest and lowest SUV the company has ever built. The Range Rover Crossover will come with a raked windscreen design, a swept-back roofline and slim LED headlamps.
Both vehicles are supposed to share the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), which in the future, will become the basis for the Jaguar XJ and the next Range Rover Sport. Expect a wide range of powertrain options with both the SUVs, including the brand new and first-ever all-electric powertrain, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. All the options will not be made available at launch. While the new Range Rover Crossover will arrive in 2021, the Range Rover EV is expected to be launched later in 2022.
The MLA architecture is capable of equipping batteries as big as 100 kWh. Electric motors will be used on both axles on both SUVs. We are expecting the flagship Range Rover SUV to come with a larger battery. The range of the Range Rover EV is expected to be around 482 km.
The design director at Land Rover, Gerry McGovern said, “For me, what we’ve actually shown is the ability of the brand to stretch and be different. We always have been quite pioneering. Let me just put it this way – if people like Bentley and Rolls-Royce can do an SUV, why can’t Land Rover or Range Rover do a luxury car?”
The new Range Rover Crossover’s design is more luxury and road-focused than off-road performance which can be seen as one of the biggest turning points for Land Rover.
