Nissan introduced Leaf Convertible to celebrate 1 lakh sales in Japan

ABU DHABI: One of the most popular electric vehicles from Nissan’s stable, the Leaf has been sold more than 1 lakh times in Japan. To commemorate this occasion, the Japanese automaker has brought to light its convertible version. The Nissan Leaf is currently in its second generation and has helped the brand to do well on the global scale and not just in Japan. The brand has sold over 320,000 units of Leaf since October 2010 globally.

Moreover, the Leaf Convertible is expected to be a show stopper for Nissan at different upcoming motor shows rather than it being produced for the general public, at least for now. As a part of the celebration, Nissan has also created a forum dedicated to establishing a “zero-emission society”. This move is likely to attract and connect individuals across the nation and form a community of people who care about the environment.

The outgoing Leaf is powered by a 40kWh motor, unlike the first model which used a 24kWh electric motor sporting a range of 200 km. On a single charge, the second-gen Leaf can cover a distance of around 378 km, with its battery being charged from zero to 80 percent in just over half an hour’s time. Thanks to the DC quick charger which makes it possible.

In the recent times, Nissan found itself entangled in a controversy related to Leaf named ‘Rapidgate’. According to which the automaker restricted the number of times a battery fitted in Nissan Leaf can undergo a quick charge. Though it was meant to reduce the battery degradation, it turned out to be a serious issue in the car. It is said that Nissan is currently involved in fixing the same by producing a powerful 60 kWh motor and replacing the current air-cooled batteries with the new liquid-cooled ones to minimize battery degradation.
