Jaguar Land Rover looking to make autonomous cars in 10 years

ABU DHABI: Land Rover looks to be very dedicated to the project where it is working towards bringing the autonomous driving technology in SUV vehicles. The company has been testing the technology ever since and has recently concluded with test-phase of the prototype of the autonomous Sport SUV at the Coventry Ring, which is considered to be one among the complicated roads in the United Kingdom.

The prototype Ranger Rover Sport has been good enough to be able to change lanes on its own, get along with other cars in the traffic and managed to exit the crossing smoothly, even while maintaining a healthy speed of 64 kmph. And all of these were made possible due to the array of sensors all around.

The front section of this Range Rover Sport prototype has a radar which can scan what is ahead of the car, be it an object or obstacle. On top of that, there is a camera placed right in the middle of the windshield that is used to specify whether there is an obstacle or an object in front and can also take a look at the markings on the road. There is a GPS placed on the roof which passes signals to the system about the position of the car on the road.

Further, at each corner of the tested prototype, there are LIDAR sensors that help in picking up the data from the environment and make a 3D image so that the car can navigate on it smoothly. Also, for the wheels, there are sensors provided to detect at what speed they are working. The data would help the system to calculate the actual speed of the car and also the condition of the road in real-time.

Hence, in the future years, both Land Rover and Jaguar are planning to include this technology that would assist the system to navigate through busy city roads on its own. And with this, the company is planning to make such autonomous cars available for the public in 10 years from now.

Interestingly, this project is a part of the £20 million UK AutoDrive (Government-funded), a project that ends this month itself.
