Audi launches SQ5 TDI, makes 700 Nm of peak torque
ABU DHABI: The performance-oriented Audi SQ5 is currently only offered in a petrol engine. All changes today with the introduction of the SQ5 TDI, which has a diesel heart.
Powering the SQ5 TDI is a 3.0-litre V6 diesel making a healthy 347 PS and a massive 700 Nm of torque. For comparison sake, the petrol SQ5 makes 354 PS and 500 Nm of torque. With the help of an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox and the Quattro all-wheel drive system, the SQ5 TDI does 0-100 kmph in 5.1 seconds and tops out at a limited 250 kmph. Helping this performance is a 48-volt main electrical system. This includes a mild hybrid system and an electric powered compressor. The latter helps when the exhaust gas provides too little energy to drive the variable turbine geometry (VGT) turbocharger, spooling up to 65,000 rpm in roughly 300 milliseconds.
The hybrid system comprises of a belt-alternator-starter (BAS) which is connected to a 10 Ah lithium-ion battery (placed under the boot floor) and also to the crankshaft. Based on which drive mode has been selected, the car will either roll at idle with the clutch disengaged, coast with the engine switched off (for up to 40 seconds) or recuperate up to 12 kW of energy. The coast function only happens if the driver takes the foot off the accelerator at speeds between 55-160 kmph.
To improve dynamics and handling, various extras can be opted for. First is the optional dynamic steering that uses strain wave gearing to vary the steering ratio over a very wide range as a function of speed and steering angle. The standard suspension, with damper control, reduces the ride height by 30 mm over the regular Q5. You also get the optional S-specific adaptive air suspension while the standard 20-inch wheels can be replaced with 21-inch ones.
Moving onto the looks, the exterior of the SQ5 TDI is similar to its petrol brother featuring design elements specific to the model. On the inside, you are treated with S sport leather/Alcantara seats that can be upgraded to Nappa leather with a rhombus pattern and a pneumatic massage function. You also get S-branded illuminated door sills and a choice of dash inlays.
The SQ5 TDI is perfect for those who love torque and want the added benefit of efficiency that comes with a diesel engine.
