Audi A6, A7 Sportback, A8, and Q5 plug-in hybrid variants unveiled
ABU DHABI: The Geneva Motor show is barely two weeks away, and Audi has given us details of plug-in hybrid variants of some of their popular models. These are the A6, A7 Sportback, A8, and Q5. Bearing the TSFI e designation, these hybrid models will blend performance and efficiency in a compelling package.
Powering these hybrid models are different turbocharged petrol engines, based on the variant. The A6, A7, and Q5 are offered with two engine options. First is the 50 TSFI e which uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit that makes 295 bhp and 450 Nm of torque. Power is delivered using a 7-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission. Next, you have the 55 TSFI e, powered by a 3.0-litre V6 producing 363 bhp and 500 Nm of torque. Along with the more powerful engine, all 55 TSFI e models get sportier styling and a suspension setup which improves handling.
On to the flagship A8, also offered in two variants and both powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine. The 55 TSFI e remains the same, and the 60 TSFI e is the other option. Power figures for the 60 TSFI e stand at 443 bhp and 699 Nm of torque mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. The A8 plug-in hybrid will only be available with a long-wheelbase body.
All models come with a 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery (located beneath the boot floor) and all-wheel/4-wheel drive as standard. The 50 TSFI e models can decouple the rear wheels from the drivetrain to help improve efficiency by reducing drag. Under braking, the hybrid systems can recover up to 80 kW of energy and the battery takes about 2 hours to charge via a 7.2 kW charger.
Electric power is handled with three drive modes named EV, Auto, and Hold. The EV mode is electric only while Auto will smartly use the engine and electric system to get the maximum efficiency. Lastly, the Hold mode reserves the battery charge state for later use.
With a push to improve efficiency, Audi aims to lure customers with its smart hybrid solutions and pave the way for a greener tomorrow.
