  • The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric is a captivating subcompact crossover that offers the perfect blend of functionality and fun. Powered by an electric motor, the Kona Electric impresses with its eye-catching aesthetics and playful handling.

    2024 Hyundai Kona Electric

Since 2017 Kona has been around. The Hyundai Kona Electric now in its second generation is larger, offering a bigger cargo area and more rear space. It features an edgy, distinctive design with a full-width LED light and sharp body lines, reflecting its EV focus. Unlike its predecessor, this time the EV was developed first, leading to unique styling cues like body-colored wheel arches and a more closed-off front end.

In the global market, the 2024 Kona Electric is equipped with a 201 hp/255 Nm electric motor and a 64.8-kWh battery that delivers an estimated range of about 420 km. The entry-level variant features a smaller 48.6-kWh battery with a range of around 320 km and 133 hp. Although the horsepower remains the same, the torque has decreased by approximately 4 Nm.

The 2024 Kona EV accelerates from zero to 100 kmph in 7.1 seconds and takes 15.5 seconds to complete the quarter mile, compared to the previous generation’s 6.6 seconds and 15.1 seconds. Despite a slight decrease in acceleration due to added weight, the new model shows significant improvement in handling, with quicker figure-eight times. It still provides ample power for passing and everyday driving despite the minor reduction in speed.

The Kona excels in daily driving with its responsive drive modes and engaging, peppy experience. It is based on the K3 platform and its handling is quite impressive. Future upgrades to the E-GMP platform of Hyundai could lead to the charging speeds of Hyundai, and the Kona might even make a transition to the Ioniq lineup. The one-pedal driving of Kona is user-friendly, though braking feels a bit less refined with a good amount of ABS feedback, yet it adequately performs for its price.

The traditional starter button gives a reassuring feeling to new EV drivers. When reversing it produces a "spaceship" sound and offers a quiet ride, though ABS and tire noise can be noticeable. On the steering wheel, the new gearshift is located and it has been borrowed from the Ioniq.

The 2024 Kona Electric has a longer wheelbase and its length has been significantly increased, enhancing its second-row legroom. The rear cargo space has been expanded to 25.5 cubic feet from 6.3 cubic feet, with additional storage space for the charging cable and improved access. Rear passengers can enjoy better amenities, including USB outlets, adjustable air vents, and cargo nets. The rear windshield wiper automatically activates when you utilize the front wipers and the vehicle is in reverse.
