Tank 300 Expert Review
Abhishek Katariya says
Mid-sized sports utility vehicles (SUVs) were once the domain of American and Japanese manufacturers. But not anymore. Chinese automobile companies are asserting their presence in the international market by introducing more affordable SUVs without compromising on features. This five-passenger SUV is a viable option for those who don’t want to spend the earth on a British or an American car.
What is the difference between the Challenger and Conqueror trims?
Over and above the features common among both trims, the Conqueror version comes with alloy wheels, multifunction steering wheel, and navigation support.
Tank 300 Interior & Features
The interior of the GWM Tank 300 seems to be Mercedes-inspired. The upright dashboard is dominated by two conjoined 12.3-inch display units and circular air vents. There’s a neo-retro feel to the dashboard. The rest of the cabin is very impressive. The seats get Nappa leather lining, and the door inserts have quilted leatherette. Some hard plastics have been used to limit production costs and increase durability. But the plastic doesn’t look cheap.
There are a number of shelves and cubby holes spread around the cabin to store odd and ends. These include a big central bin with sliding shelf, a spacious glove box, big cupholders, a big tray beneath the dashboard, and a wireless phone charger. The front door pockets have limited space. The rear seat gets its own air vents, and USB charging points.
Passenger and boot space
The 2023 GWM Tank 300 has a spacious cabin to accommodate five passengers. There’s lot of headroom and legroom for all occupants. The front seats are nicely bolstered and comfortable for long trips. The driver’s seat comes with eight-way power adjustment and four-way lumbar support. This helps in finding the ideal driving position. Driver’s seat massage function is available in the Conqueror trim.
The bench-type rear seat has nice back support. The seat itself isn’t big but can accommodate three passengers. All doors come with grip handles.
The 2023 Tank 300 comes with a 400-liter boot space. The rear seat folded down yields more space to accommodate larger items and camping equipment.
Comfort and entertainment
The 2023 GWM Tank 300 comes with a two-zone climate control unit. It’s an almost full-digital system with some physical buttons located on the dashboard’s lower part. The powerful nine-speaker, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit supports wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The screen output is bright and lively. There’s no delay in response.
300 Exterior
There’s nothing wholly original about the exterior of the GWM Tank 300. The five-passenger SUV looks bold and aggressive. The car runs on 18-inch alloy wheels. There are all-round headlights and taillights. The chunky wheel-arch extension, along with the all-black roof rails, seems to be Wrangler-inspired. The car gets underbody protection, including front bash plate, side steps for easy entry and exit, and a full-size tailgate-mounted spare wheel that fits the car’s boxy shape.
What are the dimensions of the 2023 GWM Tank 300?
The van measures 4,760mm in length, 1,930mm in width, and 1,903mm in height. Its wheelbase is of 2,750mm.
Tank 300 Mileage Running Cost
SUVs aren’t fuel efficient and neither is the 2023 Tank 300. The car returns a combined mileage of about 9kmpl. Highway mileage is of course higher.
300 Ride & Handling
The 2023 GWM Tank 300 drives well. The driving is quite refined with almost no road noise. There’s a bit of wind noise though because the Tank 300 isn’t aerodynamic. The ride quality is on the firmer side as it happens with majority of the ladder-on-frame vehicle. Even with an above average ground clearance, body control is pretty good and the car handles itself well. The steering wheel is nicely balanced though a tad light. On highways, the Tank 300 comes across a stable cruiser. The terrain-select system with five modes allows surface-specific driving.
How much ground clearance does the 2023 GWM Tank 300 have?
The SUV comes with 224mm of ground clearance.
Tank 300 Engine & Fuel Consumption
The 2023 GWM Tank 300 is available in the Challenger and Conqueror trims in the Emirates. Both are hauled by a turbocharged, four-cylinder, 2.0-liter petrol engine that produces 220PS maximum power and 382Nm peak torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission (AT). The car is mounted on a steel ladder-frame chassis, and there’s a bit of body roll during high-speed cornering. The transmission has electronically controlled mechanical rear and front differential locks. The car also has a ‘Tank Turn’ function to reduce turning radius.
Is the 2023 GWM Tank 300 available in diesel?
No. The van is available only with a 2.0-liter petrol motor.
300 Braking & Safety
The 2023 GWM Tank 300 comes with an impressive list of driver-assist features and safety equipment. The car gets adaptive cruise control, lane trace assist, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, door ajar warning, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, front and rear cross-traffic alert (with emergency braking), automatic high beam, rear and front parking sensors and a 360-degree camera. The lane-departure system is intrusive as even the slightest deviation sets off the warning. But it can be controlled via the touchscreen unit.
How many airbags does the 2023 GWM Tank 300 have?
The car comes with seven airbags.
Tank 300 Verdict
Value for money
At a starting price of AED 125,000, the 2023 Tank 300 is a worthy for money car. It comes with great features and has a very comfortable ride quality. It is a dual-purpose car, meant for daily commuting and a fair bit of off-road adventures. The technology is modern and GWM has managed to pack in everything in a neat, boxy-styled SUV
What other SUVs can be compared with the 2023 GWM Tank 300?
The Nissan X-Trail, Toyota Fortuner, Kia Sportage, and the Toyota Rav4 are the closest rivals of the Tank 300.
Verdict
Initial impressions of the 2023 Tank 300 are good. But the car is new to the Emirates market, and long-term durability is still to be tested. That aside, GWM doesn’t yet have a countrywide network of service centers. But the Tank 300 is still a nice car to own, considering its features, ease of driving, and comfortable traveling.
