Toyota files trademark for 'Land Cruiser FJ' moniker in Japan

ABU DHABI: Toyota is focusing on expanding its Land Cruiser line-up, which already comprises three rugged SUVs. The automotive giant showcased its progressive approach by introducing a completely different Land Cruiser EV. This underscores the dedication of Toyota to a sustainable automotive future. The company also unveiled a smaller rugged SUV, reflecting its strategy to cater to all types of customers' preferences and offering a more compact choice within the Land Cruiser family.

Toyota's recent trademark filing for the name 'Land Cruiser FJ' in Japan has initiated discussions that the small SUV previewed during the launch of the new-generation Land Cruiser Prado may carry this name. 

The FJ name has achieved a legendary status for Toyota, dating back to the FJ20 in 1955. The FJ moniker was used for the last time in the retro-styled "FJ Cruiser," which was sold from 2006 to 2022.

The upcoming Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be a production model based on the Toyota concept of the Compact Cruiser SUV. Teasers shown by the brand suggest a production version resembling the boxy aesthetic of Compact Cruiser, with a C-shaped headlamp signature.

Toyota has not revealed any details of the Land Cruiser FJ. The company has yet to confirm the platform underpinning the small SUV. Toyota's two ladder-frame platforms underpin most of its SUVs. The TNGA-F architecture is the more advanced platform forming the basis of the Land Cruiser Prado, Land Cruiser 300, and pickup trucks like the new Tacoma. IMV architecture, which is the older platform, underpins the Fortuner and the Hilux.  The Japanese carmaker gave a glimpse into its latest IMV 0 ladder-frame platform recently, which will underpin the upcoming Hilux Champ.
