MG RX5 - Top features
The British-Chinese manufacturer MG expanded its footprint in the Middle-East in no time after foraying in the region. Last year it rolled-out the RX5 compact SUV to take on models in the volume segment. While it isn’t a cakewalk to carve a niche in the highly contested compact space, the RX5 has done fairly well in a short span of time.
Interestingly, the RX5 outsizes most of its rivals which include Hyundai Creta, Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster. It is longer than Hyundai Tucson and measures as wide as Honda CR-V, both of which are positioned a notch above in the entry-level premium segment. These and many other factors work well for the SUV which continues to magnify in terms of popularity in the Gulf.
Here we talk about some of the top features in the MG RX5 that give it a cusp over competitors.
1. Chunky alloys
Unlike mainstream compact models in the segment, this one boasts a crossover-ish styling, separating it from bulky vehicles. At the sides, it equips meaty 18-inch alloy wheels under cladded arches. It provides the model a rugged look and offers a commanding grip on the road.
2. Rear styling
Styling at the back is modish featuring wrap-around tail-lamps connected by a thin chrome strip. Reflectors at the bottom, silver skid plate and large exhausts at either end enhance exterior styling. The integrated spoiler at the rear and shark fin antenna round up the rear styling.
3. Spacious Cabin
As mentioned above, the MG RX5 measures longer than competitors, outpacing Hyundai Tucson, a model positioned a rung above compact crossovers. It matches Honda CR-V in terms of width, while the cabin is stretched on a slightly longer wheelbase, hinting at a spacious cabin. This ensures comfortable room for occupants seated at both the ends and a voluminous boot for storing luggage.
4. Powerful engine
MG offers RX5 with two engine options in the UAE including the 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre units. Out of these, the high displacing 2.0-litre unit puts out a maximum power of 221 bhp, which seems fitting for a compact SUV. It boosts RX5’s performance and enables propelling the SUV from stand still to 100 kmph in just 8.2 seconds, which is quite impressive for an SUV in the compact space.
5. 8.0-inch colour touchscreen
Most of the new-age cars receive a large touchscreen unit supported by advanced connectivity features. In line with the contemporary models, MG RX5 also packs an 8.0-inch coloured unit on the dash which supports CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity. A USB input/radio, aux input sockets are also provided along with a 12V power supply in trunk. Additionally, six factory-fitted speakers ensure music is audible across the cabin.
6. Standard kit
MG has packed RX5 with a bunch of features even on the base variant which makes it a great value model. The entry-level grades benefit from an automatic air conditioner which is usually missing in the base trims of models in the segment. A large 8.0-inch touchscreen, cruise control, power windows, hill descent, tyre pressure monitoring system, anti-lock-braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution, all have been included in the RX5 specs sheet.
7. Affordable pricing
Looking at its size, spacious cabin and the standard kit, the RX5 comes for an affordable price, which starts at AED 54,500 for the base 1.5-litre unit. The model drives past popular vehicles in the compact SUV space such as Hyundai Creta that is priced significantly higher, while the difference in cost with Ford EcoSport is minor. Renault Duster is the most affordable option among the rivals, however, it misses out on a host of features.
8. Panoramic sunroof
A sunroof is on the wish list of most of the car buyers, though it mostly comes with the premium models only. The MG RX5 gets it only with the range-topping variant powered by the 2.0-litre unit with an all-wheel-drive set-up. For those looking for a compact SUV with a sunroof can hands down zero in on the MG RX5 and enjoy the panoramic view outside.
9. Safety
Safety is on the top of the priority list for car buyers and keeping with it, MG has armed RX5 with an array of technical aides. The safety suite on the crossover comprises of front airbags, ABS with EBD and ESC, BAS, auto hold, rear ISOFIX child fitting, and driver seat belt reminder. Besides, it has been crash-tested by C-NCAP where it scored an impressive five-star rating.
