Jeep Compass - Is it worth the price?
Jeep’s foray in the Middle East with Compass paved way for other global models in the region. The SUV was first introduced in 2007, and a heavily updated version featuring major changes was rolled out in 2018. The current Jeep Compass line-up is available in four variants including Longitude, Longitude Plus, Limited and Trailhawk priced in the range of AED 89,000 to AED 11,3000. In the segment, it battles out with Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson, two of the strongest rivals. While Compass has excellent off-roading abilities, the other two models are more suitable for urban driving.
Here is a quick look at the Jeep Compass price variant-wise -
Variant | Price |
Longitude 4x4 | AED 89,000 |
Longitude Plus 4x4 | AED 89,000 |
Limited 4x4 | AED 10,9999 to AED 12,8000 |
Trailhawk 4x4 | AED 11,2000 to AED 11,3000 |
Hailing from South Korea, Hyundai Tucson falls in the price bracket of AED 69,800 to AED 11,100. The Kia Sportage range, on the other hand, starts from AED 69,900 and goes up to AED 11,400. While there is a wide margin in the base variants of Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage juxtaposed to Jeep Compass, the mid and top-spec variants are priced along the same lines.
It remains to be seen how Jeep Compass compares to Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson on the feature front. Besides, a spec-based comparison would give more clarity on the engine configuration.
So let’s find out about the engine set-up and how does Compass compare to rivals in context to power.
Speaking of specifications, Jeep offers Compass with a single 2.4-litre engine good for 180 PS power and 237 Nm torque. A single-speed Jeep Active Drive set-up is standard save for Trailhawk which features a Jeep Active Drive Low unit. Jeep offers a six-speed and a nine-speed automatic transmission with the line-up.
Kia Sportage is available with three engine choices including the 2.0-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.4-litre units. Out of these, the 2.4-litre powertrain is the most powerful with 184 HP of maximum output. Save for the 2.0-litre motor, the rest get 4WD as a standard fitment.
While the 1.6-litre unit is paired to a seven-speed AMT gearbox, the rest of the range works in conjunction with a six-speed auto box. The latest iteration of Hyundai Tucson comes in two engine configurations with the high-displacing 2.0-litre unit making 185 HP against 228 Nm torque. Both units are linked to a six-speed auto box. The power figures clearly show Hyundai Tucson has the most potent engine of all the models with Compass on the second spot.

Now let us go through Jeep Compass’ safety kit which comprises of six standard airbags, full-speed forward collision warning with active braking, lane sense lane departure warning with lane keep assist, park sense rear park assist system, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-path detection, adaptive cruise control with stop & go, battery run-down protection, remote start system, hill start assist, etc. The Korean models lack in some of the driver assistance and safety tech that comes with performance focused Jeep Compass.
Conclusion
The Jeep Compass is a rugged five-door wagon and a great deal for off-road enthusiasts. It lacks a contemporary infotainment unit compatible with Apple CarPlay and wireless charging. However, it packs a plethora of safety tech and driver assistance tech which makes it a worthy option in the segment. As for pricing, Compass justifies its cost considering it is an off-road-focused SUV.
