2025 BMW 1 Series breaks cover

ABU DHABI: The 2025 BMW 1 Series has been unveiled with the codename F70, skipping the usual model update to jump straight to the next generation. While it may appear to be a minor update, the new internal codename indicates BMW views it as a significant step forward and an impressive next-generation vehicle.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the codename of the 2025 BMW 1 Series?

The 2025 BMW 1 Series has been codenamed the F70.
  • What kind of exterior design does the 2025 BMW 1 Series have?

The refreshed 1 Series features wider, slimmer 'kidney' grilles that are connected by adaptive cruise control radar.
  • Compared to its predecessor, the new 1 Series is larger, with a 25mm taller height and a 42mm longer body. Despite the enlarged dimensions, it retains the same wheelbase (2670mm) and width (1800mm). Cargo capacity is approximately 380 litres with the rear seats up, expanding to 1200 litres when folded. However, the 120d or 120 models reduce cargo capacity to 300 litres upright and around 1135 litres when folded due to the 48-volt battery.

For the first time, the 1 Series has dropped the 'i' from petrol model names, reserving 'i' for electric cars. Now, models are named simply with numbers, such as M135 and 118.

The refreshed 1 Series features wider, slimmer 'kidney' grilles connected by adaptive cruise control radar. New sculpted LED taillights and adaptive LED headlights enhance the exterior design. The M135 stands out with its unique grille insert, quad exhaust tips, and black M mirror caps. New 17- and 18-inch wheel designs have replaced the previous 19-inch option, and a black contrast roof is available as an optional feature.

Inside, the 1 Series is equipped with a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. It features iDrive 9 software with Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay. Air-conditioning controls are integrated into the screen, and the system offers customizable shortcuts, downloadable updates, and streaming apps through ConnectedDrive Store. Options include augmented-reality HUD, Harman Kardon sound, phone as a key, dual-zone climate control, panoramic roof, and ambient lighting.

Cabin upholstery has moved to synthetic 'Veganza' material from leather, with M Sport models featuring Alcantara accents. Flagship models offer power-adjustable massaging and heated front seats, driver’s side seat memory, and a heated steering wheel. The power-operated tailgate now includes a hands-free function.

European models come with diesel and petrol engines paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The new 1 Series impresses with improved handling due to reworked suspension featuring revised tuning and lighter components. Select models include an under-bonnet strut brace. Upgraded shock absorbers and a more precise braking system enhance performance. The M Sport pack offers quicker steering and adaptive dampers, standard on the M135, along with single-piston rear M Sport performance brakes and optional four-piston front brakes with larger discs.

Select models feature a 'Sport Boost' mode activated by holding the left shift paddle. The M135 variant includes fake engine noise, a sports exhaust, launch control, unique struts, a mechanical front differential lock, performance brakes, and stiffer anti-roll bars. An upcoming M Technology Package for the M135 offers 'weight-optimized' anti-roll bars, retuned front dampers, and additional under-floor bracing.
