Toyota to use Corolla name for all body type globally
ABU DHABI: Toyota has been one of the few automakers that have a well-reputed global presence. However, just like certain others, the company too uses different names for separate markets, like the Corolla Hatchback, which is known as the Auris in the European market.
That said, Toyota has said that it will be taking up the Corolla nameplate for the global market, including Europe. Hence, the Corolla Hatchback will no longer be called Auris. Interestingly, this decision of discontinuing the Auris name is co-incident to the use of the new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. This single architecture replaces three different platforms that are presently used by some models.
Not only the hatchback version, the sedan, and wagon body types of the Toyota Corolla will be having the same name everywhere. The wagon body type model will be called the Corolla Touring Sports and will debut in October at the Paris Motor Show. But there is still no confirmed news about the sedan yet.
The CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, Johan van Zyl, said that new TNGA platform adds a completely new dimension to the C-segment cars. Moreover, irrespective of the body type of the new Corolla, the company would be offering the electric hybrid technology in all.
Toyota has even said that the Corolla is the best-selling name among all the cars in its shed. Hence, adopting such a successful branding for the global arena will surely make a huge difference. Statistically, the company has sold over 45 million units of the Toyota Corolla right since its inception back in 1966.
Presently, Toyota Corolla is sold in sedan body type in the Middle East with quite a few trim levels. The 2.0-litre engine model makes 143 PS of power at 6,200 rpm along with a 187 Nm of torque, which comes at 3,600 rpm.
