Toyota Corolla: Variants explained
Toyota’s flagship sedan Corolla has evolved with each update. Expanding its line-up, Toyota recently added a hybrid variant in the Gulf region. Currently, it is available with three engine configurations with a CVT transmission. Catering to a large customer base globally, the Toyota sedan is synonymous with elegance and efficiency.
Corolla, without a doubt, is an ideal choice for those who like to drive in style without compromising on comfort and performance. A popular choice in its segment, 2020 Toyota Corolla is available in five variants with a different set of features. While the base variant misses out on a bunch of bits, the fully-loaded top-spec grade packs some prominent tech. Let’s find out more about new Corolla variants in detail.
Toyota Corolla engine details
- The 1.6-litre engine is available with two variants, XLI and GLI
- As for fuel economy, the XLI returns 18.2km/l, while the GLI is rated slightly less at 17.7km/l
- The Higher displacing 2.0-litre engine comes in a single XLI variant. It delivers 19.8km/l of fuel-economy
- There are two hybrid variants in the line-up (XLI HEV and GLI HEV) featuring the 1.8-litre engine with a hybrid set-up. The HEV variants are most fuel-efficient with a claimed mileage of 27.6km/l
- All the engines adhere to the Euro IV emission norms

Toyota Corolla price details
The base 1.6L variant is available at a price point of AED 71,900.
However, the hybrid variants are priced significantly higher than the conventional petrol trims.
Toyota Corolla 1.6L XLI
It is the entry-level variant in Corolla’s petrol line-up. On the outside, it misses out on alloy units and makes do with 15-inch steel wheels. At the sides, there are body painted door handles and powered wing mirrors with integrated side indicators. While there are rear combination lamps at the back; halogen units are equipped in front. The wireless door locking system is also standard on the new Corolla.

The standard safety kit comes bereft of a rearview camera.
It equips an anti-lock-braking system, anti-theft system with immobilizer and electronic brakeforce distribution.
Vehicle stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill start assist control, cruise control, dual front airbags & side bags, child restraint system, rear fog lamps and rear parking sensors are also part of the standard kit.
Toyota Corolla 1.6L GLI
Positioned a notch above 1.6L XLI, this variant carries over most of the elements and features from the base trim. It also comes with some additional features that are listed below -
It additionally gets a 7-inch display with six speakers and voice controls on the steering wheel. Apart from the standard safety kit, it features a rearview camera.
Toyota Corolla 2.0L XLI
Featuring the higher displacing 2.0-litre engine, the Corolla 2.0L XLI features 16-inch alloy wheels at the side, body-coloured door handles and powered wing mirrors with integrated side indicators. Wireless door lock, halogen headlamps, rear combination lamp and rear trunk spoiler are some other exterior features available with it.
- In addition to the standard interior features, this variant benefits from an electric power steering, Eco/Sport drive mode
- Floor mats are also available with this trim
- The rearview camera has been left out in this trim
Toyota Corolla 1.8L SLI HEV
The Corolla 1.8L SLI HEV is identical to the conventional petrol-powered variants carry over the majority of the features from its petrol sibling. On the inside, there is a 4.2-inch multi-information display and the same audio system seen in the base trims. It also misses out on the rearview camera.
Toyota Corolla 1.8L GLI
This variant sits at the top of the HEV range and features some additional bits both outside and inside.
- At the side, it sports larger 17-inch alloy wheels and wing mirrors with retractable function
- Halogen headlamps are ditched for LED units and rear also comes with LED tail-lamps
Here are some other prominent features-
While Toyota has updated its popular premium sedan, it still lacks advanced connectivity bits such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa found in rivals. From the available variants, the newly added hybrid grades are most fuel-efficient, with minimum carbon footprint. It also gets a handful of extra bits over its petrol siblings, however, the difference is cost is quite prominent.
On the other hand, the petrol variants are available with two efficient petrol engines conjunct to a CVT. The base trim misses out on alloy wheels, rearview camera among others commonly available features even in the base variants of vehicles in this segment. Overall, Corolla comes with the reliability of Toyota and is a prime option in this price bracket.
