Tesla unveils Model Y, their most affordable crossover
ABU DHABI: We all know that SUVs are all the rage and consumers just can’t seem to get enough of them, be it in any size or form. With electric vehicles slowly and steadily gaining traction, it only makes sense for companies like Tesla to introduce affordable options to capitalize on the market trend.
Well, Tesla has done just that with Model Y. Based extensively on Model 3, the Y is bigger and has three rows of seats for seven passengers. Although the last row is mostly suitable for kids. During the unveiling, Elon Musk said, “We’ll probably do more Y than S, X, and 3 (sales) combined.”
The Model Y will be available in 4 variants. The entry-level model starts at USD 39,000 (AED 1,43,300 approx). This will have the least range of approximately 370 km with a top speed of 193 kmph and is set to be released in early 2021. Taking centre stage during the unveiling was the Long Range version, costing USD 47,000 (AED 1,72,650 approx). This will be made available sometime towards the end of 2020 with a range of up to 483 km and a top speed of 209 kmph, 0-97 kmph takes 5.5 seconds. The next model, with the same long-range batteries, is the Dual Motor AWD version, costing USD 51,000 (AED 1,87,300 approx). It can do 0-97 kmph in 4.8 seconds and tops out at 217 kmph. Last but not least we have the Performance model pegged at USD 60,000 (AED 2,20,400 approx).
Performance figures come in with a 0-97 kmph time of 3.5 seconds while topping out at 241 kmph. The range for the last two mentioned models is 450 km and is slated for a late 2020 release.
The interior of the Model Y is very similar to the Model 3 with a giant 15-inch screen taking place at the centre of the dashboard. You also get an all-glass roof, Tesla Auto Pilot and a huge 65 cubic foot cargo space. Space can also expand depending on the seat configuration.
By the time the Model Y makes it to market, Tesla will face stiff competition from other established manufacturers. Companies like Hyundai, Toyota, BMW, Nissan, Ford, General Motors, and others will also launch their electric SUVs, giving customers more options to choose from. We do not know when the Model Y will make it to the local region, but this electric SUV battle is just at the tip of the iceberg.
