New Mercedes-Benz G-Class launched in the UAE
ABU DHABI: If you haven’t yet stumbled across pictures and posts of the new Mercedes-Benz G in the UAE on your social media feeds, chances are that you are living in a cave. Yes, that’s what the extent of the excitement is amongst automobile enthusiasts that followed the launch of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Dubai.
It is one of the most popular off-roaders in the UAE and with the unveiling of this snazzy new version, it has quickly become the talk of the town! G-Wagen stands for Gelandewagen that literally means a “cross-country vehicle” and has enjoyed a successful journey since its launch originally in 1979.
The new model is all the hype because of its latest features such as its “Desert driving mode” which makes dune-bashing look like a cakewalk! According to Peter Schoren, head of G-Class sales and product management, this SUV is the most capable model on the sand, in its class till now.
The next-generation features the latest technology, improved performance and the loved boxy shape that is typical to the G-Wagen. Starting from the front of the car, there is a brand new front grille made complete with LED headlights and despite retaining the boxy shape of the car, the lines running down the vehicle are now round rather than being straight.
This new version is going to be longer by 53 mm and wider by 120 mm when compared with the current model. The rough and rugged appearance hides the new front suspension underneath which has independent double wishbones to replace the 4-decade old stick axle.
Talking about the engine which is a revised twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 with a refreshing 9-speed automatic gearbox, it looks like a winner already. The range-topping G 63 will produce 585 horsepower.
The interiors match the latest elements of all the latest Mercedes models and will include a multi-function steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls, redesigned air-con vents and a pair of 12.3-inch display modules.
Most interestingly, one can select the drive mode from the many options of Comfort, Sport, Individual or Eco and a unique addition to the G-Wagen, the G-mode. The mode selected option then automatically adjusts the throttle, steering and gearing of the vehicle for the best driving experience. The rear legroom in this model has also increased by 150 mm owing to the increased dimensions.
