Mitsubishi rolls out pilot program for smart charging solutions in Japan

ABU DHABI: As the automotive industry has started shifting towards electric vehicles to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Mitsubishi is dedicated to advancing EV technology. EV infrastructure is incomplete without smart charging solutions as they improve efficiency, optimize charging processes, and integrate into the grid renewable energy sources.

To promote sustainable mobility Mitsubishi has partnered with MC Retail Energy and Kaluza and has launched a new EV smart charging service PoC to cut down the charging costs in Japan.

The EV smart charging service gives the Outlander PHEV owners the flexibility to conveniently schedule the charging times of their vehicles using a smartphone app linked to the EV charging-control platform developed by Kaluza. This platform works by calculating the best charging schedules by identifying the times when the prices of electricity are at their lowest and considering the designated charging times. 

The Outlander PHEV is the leading plug-in hybrid in the world. This particular model contributes substantially to the overall sales figures of the brand, representing half of the total sales volume of Mitsubishi.

Users don’t need to purchase any additional equipment to use the charging plan as Mitsubishi Motors’ connected systems directly manage the service, interfacing with the innovative platform of Kaluza. They just need to subscribe to a charging plan that MC Retail Energy has developed exclusively for this service.

The inspiration behind the PoC is the success of a similar project in the UK. By optimizing EV charging schedules to lower carbon emissions and electricity expenses the Proof of Concept aims to replicate the success.
