Mercedes-Benz showcases electric G-Class SUV at Auto China 2024

ABU DHABI: Mercedes-Benz debuted the all-electric G 580 EV at Auto China 2024, affirming the iconic G-Class’s continuation into the electric era. This marks the entry of the brand in the electric off-road vehicle segment.

The all-electric G 580 EV features four individually controlled motors and an advanced electric drive system. It delivers 859 pound-feet of torque and 579 horsepower and boasts exceptional off-road capabilities including a "tank turn" feature for G-Steering and 360-degree spins for improved maneuverability.

Torque vectoring, virtual differential locks, and an off-road crawl function help the G 580 EV maintain its all-terrain capability. With independent front suspension and a ladder frame chassis, it retains the performance and rugged design of the G-Class.

The vehicle comes with a 116 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery and marks a huge step towards a new era for the G-Class nameplate. The electric G also comes with special underbody protection plates to prevent any kind of damage to the battery while driving it on rough terrain.

The G580 EV has a premium cabin with adjustable ambient lighting and Nappa leather upholstery. From the upright dashboard, it offers a commanding view and the massaging seats come with adjustable side bolsters. In comparison to its rivals, the rear seat is not very spacious.

At Auto China Mercedes-Benz showcased various models including the CLA Class concept, Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance, updated EQS, Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, long wheelbase E-Class and GLS Night Series. 

Ola Kallenius, Mercedes-Benz Group Chairman emphasized the importance of China as a technology hub and key market, with investments focused on carbon neutrality, electrification, and digitization to align with future trends.
