Mazda 6 production comes to an end in Japan

ABU DHABI: Twelve years after its successful launch, Mazda will reportedly stop producing its Mazda 6 Japanese market version in the northern spring of 2024. This report has been issued by the Japanese newspaper Chugoku Shimbun. 

The production of this beloved sedan has already ended in 2021 in North America and its sale in China is wrapping up this year. Reports indicate that the assembly of the Mazda 6 will continue in Vietnam, ensuring the Southeast Asian markets, including Thailand get an uninterrupted supply of this model. While Mazda Australia, which currently imports the Mazda 6 from Japan, has not said anything about this report, the strategic shift in the car’s production to Vietnam signifies a strategic decision by the automaker to maintain its presence in Southeast Asia.

Global sales for the Mazda 6 are expected to be around 34,000 units for the fiscal year ending March 2023, which is quite less than the projected figures of the CX-5. The Mazda 6’s production has already ended in the US, UK, and Canadian markets. Despite rear-wheel-drive replacement rumours, the model's future seems uncertain, especially considering the sedan sales decline in major markets like Japan and the US.

Mazda is now focusing on SUVs and is planning to launch four new models, including the CX-70, CX-60, CX-90, and CX-80. The partnership of Mazda with Changan in China hinted about plug-in hybrid and electric sedans but Mazda has not provided much details about this. The 2023 Mazda 6 has received a few updates, such as a special 20th Anniversary edition. Some of the advanced features available in the higher trims include advanced assistance features and wireless Apple CarPlay.

The Japanese carmaker updated the Mazda 6, boosting its 2.5-litre turbocharged engine's power to 173kW and enhancing the six-speed automatic transmission. However, the future of the model is uncertain after the Japanese production’s end. 

The Mazda 6 is currently available in the UAE in eight different colour options. It is one of the best sedan cars with a wide, athletic stance and seamless connectivity options.
