Lexus announces record sales for 2019

Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota’s luxury car department Lexus has announced record global sales for 2019. The premium car brand sold 765,330 units in 2019, which is a 10 percent increase from the previous year. The 2019 sales numbers are more than double the units sold a decade earlier in 2009.

Lexus, in a number of major regions, witnessed a year-on-year increase in sales. The only exception was North America where the brand sold 325,000 units which is at par with its sales in 2018. North America, which rakes in the highest Lexus sales, is the most important market for the brand.

Lexus, in 2019, delivered around 202,000 units in China. The luxury car market in China is booming, which has led to an increased demand for premium cars. The brand sold 87,000 cars in Europe and 62,000 units in Japan. Both regions witnessed a double-digit growth of 14 percent and 13 percent respectively.

The brand notched up an impressive performance in other regions like East Asia and the Middle East. Both regions saw an eight percent rise in sales to around 34,000 and 32,000 units respectively. The lesser markets comprised the remainder of the sales.

Lexus, in a statement, claimed that it has got encouraging response from customers for the seventh-generation ES sedan and the UX compact sports utility vehicle (SUV). The upgraded RX luxury crossover vehicle too witnessed a rising demand that led to bolstering the overall sales volume.

Despite the rather encouraging sales numbers, performance-wise Lexus is behind other premium automobile manufacturers like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz in global sales. While Audi sold 1,845,550 cars in 2019, BMW posted 2.17 million unit sales in the year under review. The Stuttgart-headquartered Mercedes-Benz continued to top the luxury car sales with 2,339,562 units.

Meanwhile, industry sources suggest that the Lexus LC slated to contest the 4 Hours of Nürburgring Endurance Race this year, will be hauled by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
