Get ready for an all-electric Volvo XC40 this year

ABU DHABI: It’s a time when every automaker is working hard turning their portfolio from conventional to electric power. Swedish automaker Volvo is no different. They have an aim where 50% of their sales should be from electric vehicles, which they want to achieve by the middle of the next decade.

It appears that an all-electric Volvo XC40 compact SUV will lead the way in the company endeavours. This will go on sale in 2020 along with the Polestar 2 and start the future of electric vehicles for Volvo. Both these cars have a lot of similarities, for starters they use the same Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) which in turn forms the base for the Lynk & Co 01, 02, and 03 models. What is Lynk & Co? Well, it is the new brand by Geely (parent company for Volvo and Lotus).

Volvo did not share any details regarding the electric setup for the XC40. However, the Polestar 2 might just give us a glimpse into what to expect, considering how similar both models are. Just to refresh your memory, the Polestar 2 has twin electric motors on each axle, and each one produces 204 bhp/330 Nm. It also has a range of up to 500 km. One speculation is that the all-electric XC40 could produce similar output to the hybrid T5 Engine version. Powering this variant is a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol motor (which puts out 180 bhp) and an electric motor (developing 82 bhp) with a 9.7-kWh battery. The combined output stands at 262 bhp and 425 Nm of torque, 0-100 kmph comes in at 7.3 seconds. Top speed is rated at 205 kmph with an all-electric range of 54 km.

The Volvo XC40 was the 2018 European Car of the Year, and it only makes sense for the company to get it electrified as soon as possible. It should give buyers more options to choose from in the compact SUV segment and help increase the sales of this stylish car.
