BMW approves entry-level i1 and i2 EVs

ABU DHABI: BMW is set to introduce two new electric vehicles, the i1 and i2, following the success of the discontinued i3. The i2 has been positioned as the spiritual successor to the i3, while the i1 will be offered as a saloon or hatchback starting in 2027. According to reports, the i2 will be introduced in 2028.

The i1 and i2 will utilize BMW's advanced electrical technology developed under the Neue Klasse concept vehicle series. Reports indicate they will offer both four-wheel and front-wheel drive configurations. While details are scarce about pricing, it is expected that these models will be more budget-friendly compared to BMW's existing electric lineup.

The Neue Klasse platform, found in the saloon and X concepts, comes with an 800V electric architecture that supports quad, dual, and single-motor drivetrains. BMW has confirmed two variants: NAx for four- and rear wheel drive and NBx for four and front wheel drive. Along with its electric architecture, the Neue Klasse platform integrates advanced connectivity and software slated for the upcoming BMW models.

As entry-level EVs, the BMW i1 and i2 may be equipped with batteries with lower energy density raising the need for more frequent charging. However, using an 800-volt platform enables fast charging capabilities, enhancing practicality and convenience for users. These models will employ sixth-gen cylindrical cells of BMW, offering up to 30% faster charging times, over 20% higher energy density, and a 30% increase in range in comparison to current fifth-gen prismatic cells.

Unlike the updated 2 Series and 1 Series which are based on the existing FAAR platform, the i1 and i2, new compact EVs have been designed around the Neue Klasse electric car architecture of BMW. This dedicated platform underscores the commitment of BMW to advancing electric mobility.
