Bentley launches V8 version of the Continental GT
ABU DHABI: If the W12 powered Continental GT is something that you can’t handle, then fear not there is a new V8 version. This new unit was launched in the latest 3rd generation Continental GT and GT Convertible. According to Bentley, the new V8 promises a more agile character for the Grand Tourer.
Under the hood, there is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 which makes a healthy 542 bhp and 770 Nm of torque. Talking about performance, 0-100 kmph is dismissed in 4.0 seconds (for the Coupe) while it takes 4.1 seconds for the convertible version. Both versions have a top speed of 318 kmph. Power is sent to an active all-wheel drive system via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The all-wheel drive system is predominantly rear biased, for improved efficiency and dynamics. How does this compare with the W12 model? Well, the coupe version takes 3.7 seconds for 0-100kmph while the convertible version of the W12 takes 3.8 seconds. Top speed for these is rated at 333 kmph.
According to Bentley, the new V8 promises not only “thrilling performance” but also “greater efficiency” thanks to a cylinder-deactivation system which shuts off four cylinders in "suitable conditions." The switch from 4 to 8 cylinders takes just 20 milliseconds and does not interfere with the smooth drivability of the GT.
The feature list of the new V8 variants include 20-22-inch alloy wheels, LED matrix headlights, a 10-speaker 650W sound system, quad exhaust tips, air suspension, digital driver display, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. You also get 7 colors to choose from and a variety of leather/wood veneers for the interiors. A distinguishing feature from the W12 version is the exhaust setup, and the 12-cylinder GT has two big oval outlets versus the quad layout of the V8 powered GT. Another smaller difference is the V8 badging on the front fenders.
Bentley has started accepting orders of the new V8 GT in America, with deliveries set to take place in the third quarter of the year. For the rest of the world, the V8 powered GT will be available from the first quarter of 2020.
