Audi launches R8 LMS GT2 with massive 640 hp of power
ABU DHABI: With the establishment of a GT2 class, GT racing is set for a bit of makeover in 2020. The GT2 cars will fill the ongoing gap between GT3 and GT4. Audi has now launched the fantastic looking R8 LMS GT2 for the new regulations. It is equipped with a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine, which is capable of churning out a monstrous 640 hp of maximum power. The power figure is 140 hp more than the supposedly quicker GT3 class.
Audi mentioned that even though the latest car will flaunt a higher top speed, its GT3 class will still be quicker throughout a full lap of the circuit, thanks to the gearbox, weight and aero trickery. In addition to that, the brand notes that GT3 has become professional and very expensive. Moreover, this vehicle will serve for the gentleman racer or possibly for someone who desires an exclusive track day beast.
Audi LMS GT2 is pretty much based on the production R8. However, it comes with full racing suspension, as well as CFRP panels and winglets all over the shop. The power spring approaches from a fantastic roof scoop and an engine-management upgrade, which builds a ram-air intake effect. The interior features a button-filled centre console taken straight out of the ’90s and the mandatory FIA-spec roll cage. The dry weight of this car is 1,350 kg, which is 100 kg lighter than the GT4 car.
It’s not yet disclosed whether the vehicle will be road legal or not. However, Audi Sport boss Oliver Hoffman stated, “ We have some good ideas for more extreme models of the R8. Developing the R8 road and race cars in parallel was a great experience for both sides,” referring to the GT3 version.
