Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 facelift unveiled
ABU DHABI: The 6th generation of Volkswagen minivan, the Transporter, has been unveiled. Launched back in 2015, this new model brings significant changes to keep it competitive.
Starting with the outside, you get a variety of colors to choose from. The front brings larger air intakes allowing more air into the engine, and you also get LED lights with DRLs. These lights have been redesigned to give the van a cleaner look. Hop into the new cabin and you are greeted with a host of standard equipment. Features like electric windows, central locking, and electrically adjustable/heated exterior mirrors are present across all variants. The latest MIB3 infotainment systems from Volkswagen take centre stage inside. These new screens (starting at 6.5-inches) offer eSIM functionality for calling and internet services. App Connect, wireless Apple CarPlay, Qi wireless charging tray, and a 230-volt socket are some of the highlights inside the Volkswagen Transporter.
Drivers opting for variants higher than the Multivan Highline get a 10.25-inch virtual cockpit for an enhanced driving experience.
Engine duties are carried out by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder TDI engine in various states of tune. The entry model makes 90 PS, the mid-level models make 110-150 PS, and the top of the line variant produces 199 PS. Dual-Clutch DSG transmission and 4motion all-wheel drive are optional on select models. In the 199 PS variant, DSG is a standard fitment.
If going green is a must for you then the VW Transporter T6.1 is available in an all-electric version. ABT and Volkswagen have partnered to develop this model. The electric motor makes 112 PS and is powered by either a 33.8 kWh or 77.6 kWh battery. The bigger battery has a range of over 400 km.
On the safety side of things you get Rear Traffic Alert, Trailer Assist (maximum trailer weight of 2,500 kg), Park assist, road sign recognition, and a rearview camera. A standout standard feature is the Cross Wind Assist, which stabilizes the Bulli in the event of strong gusts of wind.
With an impressive 12 million units sold since its inception, this new facelift should help the company dominate the market. Sales of the Transporter T6.1 will start in September and prices are yet to be revealed.
