Volkswagen's ID.2all concept’s production-ready version marks the beginning of a new era for the brand. Enthusiasts can expect a shift toward innovation and design, reflecting a return to Volkswagen's roots.

The head of R&D also highlighted "major advancements" across the ID lineup starting in 2026, with reduced battery costs, enhanced functionality, and a new design approach, promising an evolution in their EV offerings.

The design of the new SUVs and ID cars will be inspired by the ID2all concept, reflecting a retro, friendlier aesthetic that seems to be similar to the classic models produced by Golf. This new direction aligns with the core identity of Volkswagen, as envisioned by Andreas Mindt, the design boss of the company.

Volkswagen is also working on a sporty ID.2 GTI while retaining the GTI “DNA” and with tons of performance enhancements. The first electric GTI will be launched in 2026.

Grunitz noted rules related to upcoming EU7 emissions will lead to a reduced combustion engine lineup, though there will be more options for mild hybrids. While some of these models may get phased out, a significant update will be received by the Polo to meet new standards.

Volkswagen’s Grunitz discussed the challenge that they might have to encounter if they decide to invest in parallel architectures such as MEB for electric vehicles and MQB for combustion models. He even said that, despite less-than-expected EV sales, MQB likely does not have a set end date, and Volkswagen could integrate electric powertrains into it in the future.

Marketing and sales head Martin Sander emphasized that while dedicated architectures for each technology offer benefits to customers, Volkswagen aims to share components across platforms in the next generation while preserving distinct features.
