Toyota and Lexus recall more than one million cars in the US

ABU DHABI: Toyota and Lexus have recalled roughly 1 million cars in the U.S. because, in the event of a crash, the front passenger airbags may fail to offer the much-needed protection posing the risk of severe injury to riders.

The recall has been issued for cars built between 2020 and 2022 because of a defect in the Occupant Classification System sensors. A potential defect like this could cause a short circuit because of which the airbag system may not detect the weight and presence of the passenger failing to deploy as designed.

The models affected by the recall include the Kluger, RAV4, Camry, and Corolla along with certain Lexus RX and ES variants. The recall will mostly impact North American market models. Over a million models in the US and nearly 100,000 vehicles in Canada will be affected. Toyota Australia has confirmed that the recall won’t affect the locally sold Klugers, despite sharing the same manufacturing facility as the impacted US models.

As a remedy, Lexus and Toyota dealers will thoroughly inspect all the affected vehicles free of cost and if necessary they even replace OCS sensors without charging any amount from the vehicle owners. Toyota said the owners of all vehicles affected by the recall will be notified by the middle of February 2024.
