The 2020 Land Rover Defender will be available in 3 different types
ABU DHABI: The 2020 Land Rover Defender is all set to make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September this year. New reports suggest that there could be 3 versions of the SUV and not just one. The 3 versions will be of different sizes and could be called Defender 90, Defender 110 and Defender 130.
Going down memory lane, the 90, 110 and 130 represented the length of the wheelbase but for the 2020 Defender, this will not hold true. Looking at each model, the Defender 90 is a 2-door variant and the closest representation of the previous Defender. The exact seating arrangement is still unknown, it could offer seating for 5 or 6. Dimension wise, the Defender 90 has a wheelbase of 101.9 inches with an overall length of 170.2 inches.
Moving on to the Defender 110, which is likely to be the more mainstream variant, it will have 4 doors and seat 5/6/7. The wheelbase is longer and measures 119 inches while the overall length stands at 187.3 inches. These dimensions are very similar to the Wrangler and Mercedes-Benz G 550.
The largest of the trio is the Defender 130. It will share the same wheelbase as the Defender 110 but the overall length increases to 200.8 inches (possibly due to the rear overhang). The increased length would mean seating for 8 people. The size puts the Defender 130 squarely up against the Mercedes-Benz GLS.
Engine options for the new Defenders could vary from 2.0/3.0-litre petrol/diesel options. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol Ingenium motor is good for 300 bhp and 400 Nm. There will also be a plug-in hybrid variant with a 2.0-litre engine producing 404 bhp and 400 Nm. The 3.0-litre turbo V6 is said to produce 404 bhp and 550 Nm. A manual transmission is unlikely to be offered, which is a let down for 4x4 enthusiasts.
It remains to be seen what variant Land Rover will unveil at Frankfurt, the Defender 110 is expected to be the first into the market followed by the Defender 90. The Defender 130 could still be a year away. Local availability is still not known yet.
