Opel Corsa E transformed as the world’s first electric rally car
The world’s first electric rally car, the Opel Corsa is all set to mark its debut in 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The Corsa-e will compete in the 2020 ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup and replace the current Opel Adam R2. The ADAC Opel Rally Cup has an entry ticket for 100 young drivers from 18 countries to enter the universe of rallying.
The new Opel Corsa-e Rally comes with an electric motor that produces 136 PS and 260 Nm of torque, and a 50 kWh battery pack, same as the road version of the electric supermini. Electric Corsa is equipped with a Torsen limited-slip differential, the other rally-specs include new suspension, four-piston brake calipers, a hydraulic “fly-off” handbrake and adapted brake management, which should come together to make the car tight and balanced at high speeds and when going around corners. It is also fitted with a lightweight roll cage. As reported, the automaker plans to make 15 examples of the new Corsa-e Rally for the 2020/2021 ADAC e-Rally Cup, with price estimation of AED 200,000 mark.
The company officials mention the Corsa-e as the electric car for everyone – which is completely suited to everyday work and absolutely affordable, attributes that equally apply to motorsport. It is specifically dynamic and great to drive. Using the production car as the basis, Opel is the first carmaker in the world to have developed an electric rally car. “With the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup, we are bringing electric drive for the first time to mainstream sport and especially to young-driver support. The innovative concept and the cooperation with Groupe PSA open new possibilities for us, especially in the support of young drivers”, stated by Hermann Tomczyk, President ADAC Sport.
The ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup will take place during rounds of the German Rally Championship and other selected events. The event is scheduled to start in summer 2020 and there will be at least 10 qualifying rounds through 2021 to form a “Super Season”.
