Kia's upcoming compact SUV to be called Clavis

ABU DHABI: Kia is planning to come up with a new compact SUV, internally codenamed as the Kia AY. The new model will be a sub-4 meter SUV and a high-riding vehicle. According to the sources, it might be named the Kia Clavis and is scheduled to debut sometime in 2024-2025. It will slot between the Seltos and Sonet models.

The upcoming Kia SUV  will compete with the Mahindra XUV300 and Maruti Brezza in the Indian market. It will be available with multiple powertrain options, including electric. The compact SUV equipped with a potent internal combustion engine will be launched before the EV. 

For the Indian market, Kia is also thinking about hybrid powertrains. The hybrid tech will integrate with the carmaker’s existing 1.2L & 1.5L naturally-aspirated petrol engines making it a great choice for environmentally conscious consumers. 

Kia India will manufacture around 1 lakh units of the AY SUV annually. Out of this 80 percent of the production will be dedicated to the internal combustion engine versions. A major part of this production will be reserved for the purpose of export. With an SUV-like design, the Clavis stands out in its segment. Despite its muscular looks, the SUV does not have 4WD technology.

Not just Clavis, Kia will also launch the new-gen Carnival MPV in 2024 in the Indian market. The company will also launch the Kia EV9, its second born-electric SUV next year.
