Kia doubles down on its electric vehicle portfolio with Concept EV5

ABU DHABI: Kia revealed its newest concept, the EV5, during the Kia Chinese EV Day event. The automaker seems to expand its EV offerings and achieve a strong position in the zero-emissions electric vehicle market through this car.

The Kia Concept EV5 previews a midsize crossover electric SUV that will slot below the recently-revealed EV6 and EV9. Like the gas-powered Telluride and EV9, concept EV5 has an angular and boxy shape with squared edges and sculpted lines. Due to the boxy design, EV5 appears to be bigger than EV9.

The Concept EV5 seems to be a next-generation version of Kia's Telluride three-row SUV. At the front, the EV5 sports Kia's trademark "Digital Tiger Face." But the LED headlights do not have the blocky elements seen on the EV9. The panoramic sunroof works as a power source as it is integrated with solar panels, so passengers can keep their devices charged.

Kia has not disclosed mechanical specifications yet, but as per a few speculations, it will ride on the same 800V E-GMP platform as other new Kia and Hyundai models.

The key highlight of EV5 is its premium interior. The cabin seems to be like a futuristic café. Kia says the interior design theme includes elements like " Caring, Re-Charging, and Healing."

While designing this futuristic car, the designers have blurred the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. There is tons of foot and leg room in the cabin. The flat floor makes the seating flexible, and the seats can swing and swivel for easier interior access. The bench-style front seat offers more space and comfort for front passengers. Added bonuses are a rearward-facing third-row seat and a table that rises from the floor.

The EV5's main competitors will be Nissan Ariya, Toyota bZ4X, and Volkswagen ID4. After its launch in China, the car is expected to arrive in UAE.
