Hyundai to develop series hybrid systems for future models

ABU DHABI: In 2026, Hyundai will introduce its series hybrid technology, with the first model expected to debut internationally in 2027. Hyundai confirmed this at the 2024 CEO Investor Day, stating that the new Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology will combine electric motors with internal combustion engines.

The upcoming EREV models will offer over 900 km combined range, all thanks to their integration of electric motors and internal combustion engines. This technology will mainly focus on the Chinese and North American markets and will come with four-wheel drive. For enhanced performance, it will utilize two electric motors.

In a "range extender" or a series hybrid system, the internal combustion engine works as a generator. The wheels are not powered by it directly but it charges an electric motor that drives them. This lowers costs by reducing the requirement of larger-capacity batteries.

Hyundai is planning to double its hybrid lineup by 2030 from seven to fourteen models. Under its Genesis brand, it will incorporate luxury options. Additionally, by the same year, the company will offer a complete range of electric vehicles, from high-performance to budget-friendly and luxury models, totalling 21 models.

The new hybrid technology of Hyundai marks an advance in their commitment to offering the best automotive solutions. By integrating electric motors with internal combustion engines, they aim to offer more versatile and efficient vehicles. This initiative reflects the strategy of Hyundai to meet evolving market demands and enhance its product lineup.
