Hyundai and Kia unveil Active Air Skirt to reduce aerodynamic drag

ABU DHABI: In the recent era, it has become important to secure an excellent driving range from a single charge making the relationship between aerodynamics and vehicles more important. Aerodynamic performance impacts power performance and driving stability. Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation introduced the ‘Active Air Skirt’ technology that effectively minimizes aerodynamic resistance during high-speed driving. This ground-breaking EV tech helps improve the driving stability and range of electric vehicles. 

The 'Active Air Skirt' positioned between the wheels and front bumper, remains concealed during normal operation. It only activates if you’re driving above 80 kmph to reduce aerodynamic resistance. It is made of rubber minimizing the chances of splashing and external object damage. This latest EV tech operates up to 200 kmph speeds. Its front tyre coverage is similar to Hyundai's E-GMP platform, improving downforce for improved stability and traction.

Hyundai and Kia have successfully tested the 'Active Air Skirt' in the Genesis GV60. After the pending performance and durability tests are over the manufacturers are considering mass production. They have even filed patents in the United States and South Korea. 

Sun Hyung Cho, Hyundai's VP emphasized the impact of the Active Air Skirt on SUVs and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to enhancing the performance of EVs through consistent aerodynamic advancements.

Hyundai has already positioned itself as a forerunner in aerodynamics with the 0.21 Cd of the IONIQ 6. This underscores the commitment of Hyundai to shaping the electric mobility’s future.
