Hyundai and Kia join hands to develop PEM for advanced hydrogen fuel cell systems

ABU DHABI: Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have entered into a collaborative agreement with W.L. Gore and Associates. The main aim of this collaboration is to develop an advanced polymer electrolyte membrane, an important part of hydrogen fuel cell systems. The joint efforts will enhance the durability and performance of the PEM and revolutionize the hydrogen fuel cell systems efficiency in Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

The PEM enhances the performance of fuel cell system performance, specifically in the next-gen fuel cell electric commercial vehicles. 

For over 15 years, Kia, Gore, and Hyundai Motor have worked together on fuel cell technology. They are renewing their partnership to develop an optimized fuel cell system that will benefit commercial vehicles. The main aim will be to elevate durability and performance. This joint effort also reflects a commitment to advancing fuel cell technology for efficient and sustainable use in the transportation sector. The membrane technology of Gore is being used in around a hundred fuel cell electric vehicle models, including the NEXO FCEV manufactured by Hyundai. 

Hyundai Motor Group is currently working to expand its fuel cell business globally. This expansion encompasses various sectors, ranging from commercial and passenger vehicles to power generation, aerospace applications, marine vessels, and beyond.
