Ferrari explores eco-friendly e-fuels for future vehicles

ABU DHABI: Ferrari, known for making some of the most coveted supercars in the world,  is now making an SUV. Ferrari recognises that the distinctive sound of its V-8 and V-12 engines is unmatched by electric vehicles. Thus, to preserve the essence of its internal combustion engines amid stricter emissions regulations, Ferrari is considering carbon-neutral alternatives such as hydrogen and synthetic e-fuels.

In an interview, Benedetto Vigna, Ferrari CEO stated that Ferrari still believes that internal combustion engines can be a boon for the future, supported by carbon-neutral fuels. Ferrari is teaming up with partners to prepare for a switch to e-fuels in Formula 1 by 2026 when F1 will adopt 100% sustainable fuel. Aramco, an F1 sponsor, is also involved in the development of e-fuels for both road cars and motorsports.

Vigna stated that Ferrari is trying to make the best use of hydrogen technology, though widespread availability is anticipated to be by 2030. The testing of hydrogen will first be conducted in motorsports, starting next year with the Extreme H series, featuring cars with batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. 

Along with this, the 24 Hours of Le Mans may introduce a hydrogen-powered class by 2026. Concepts from Porsche, Ferrari, Alpine, and Toyota are already in development, with Ferrari having started its work on hydrogen engines.

Ferrari's CEO has given a hint that sustainable fuels may keep combustion engines beyond 2035 on the market, in line with the proposal of the European Commission allowing e-fuel-powered cars. He even said that e-fuel development has a bright future and could enhance the carbon-reduction efforts of Ferrari.
