Toyota GR Supra Expert Review
Abhishek Katariya says
The Toyota GR Supra is the flagship performance car from Toyota under its performance-oriented sub-brand Gazoo Racing (GR). Sharing its platform with the BMW Z4, the new Toyota GR Supra brings back the iconic era of the Toyota Supra from the bygone years, which was known for its thrilling driving experience and turbocharged engine. The Toyota GR Supra on sale in the UAE is offered in two variants differentiated by their transmission options, and in six colour options – White, Red, Grey, Grey Metallic, Light Yellow and Black.
Toyota GR Supra Interior & Features
Unlike the exterior, much of the interior of the Toyota GR Supra has been retained from the BMW Z4, which is not a bad thing, considering how sporty and feature-packed this cabin feels. The GR Supra distinguishes itself from the Z4 with a different-looking colour combination for the interior, which is a dual-tone black and wine-red theme.
The round-themed three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel has both gloss black inserts and wine red trim finish, and behind it sits a full-TFT instrument console, in which the digital tachometer takes centre stage. The centre console here comes with a free-standing 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which supports Apple CarPlay and a 12-speaker JBL audio system.
The middle layer of the dashboard here looks sleek and houses AC vents in the centre console and corners of the dashboard. Below the sleek layer of audio control buttons, the centre console has a wraparound design, and house panel for the dual-zone automatic climate control and various other functions, including transmission lever, electronic parking brake and drive mode controls. The cabin is also equipped with additional features like powered front seats, wireless charger, ambient lighting, paddle shifters, head-up display, push start-stop button and more.
GR Supra Exterior
While the Toyota GR Supra is said to be based on the BMW Z4, that doesn’t look the case when you see it from the outside, as the former has a completely different-looking bodywork. Inspired by the original Toyota Supra from the late’80s, this new-era sports car has a well-planted stance and an aggressive design, making it a true-blue sports car.
At the front, the Toyota GR Supra has long overhangs and curved bonnet lines, which flow towards the front fascia, comprising of large headlamps at the front. Featuring all-LED illumination with daytime running LEDs, these headlamps have curved designs and scoops below their outer edges on the front bonnet for aerodynamic purposes. There are additional air passages placed on the front bumper, making the Supra even more aggressive and aerodynamic in its appeal.
The side profile of the Toyota GR Supra looks tempting with the long overhangs, two-door look and low ground clearance playing their parts. The well-sculpted front and rear fenders make the GR Supra look muscular, while the air recesses in the door panels and sloping roofline at the back enhance its aerodynamics.
At the back, the Toyota GR Supra reminds you of the original Supra with its large and horizontally-stretched tail lamps, which here feature LED inserts. The boot here looks stubby and clean, while the rear bumper has a huge appearance with a sporty-looking diffuser at the bottom.
Toyota GR Supra Ride & Handling
The Toyota GR Supra shines well in handling, courtesy of the sharply-tuned steering and suspension setups and 19-inch wheels. The adaptive variable suspension and integrated sport driving with normal and sport modes further make the driving experience feel more focused and thrilling.
GR Supra Engine & Fuel Consumption
The Toyota GR Supra shares its 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine with the BMW Z4, which comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. With a maximum power output of 382 bhp and a maximum torque output of 500 Nm, this engine enables the GR Supra to cover the o-100 kmph sprint in 4.1 seconds and give it a top speed of 250 kmph.
Toyota GR Supra Braking & Safety
The list of safety features offered as standard in the Toyota GR Supra include front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, adaptive cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, blind spot monitoring system, lane departure warning, lane change assist, pre-collision system, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors and reverse camera.
GR Supra Verdict
The Toyota GR Supra carries forward the tradition of the original first-generation Supra with its sporty and well-sculpted bodywork and thrilling performance and handling, making it a true-blue sports car, albeit with BMW genes under its skin.
