MG GS Expert Review

The compact crossover and SUV segment is on a roll in recent times, and MG, being the first pioneers in this category, has got a first mover advantage in the form of the MG GS. The GS has been on sale for quite a long time now, and has seen the segment dwelling in its full form. The MG GS available in UAE has two variants on offer – Comfort in 2WD guise and Luxury in 4WD guise.

MG GS Interior & Features

On the inside, the MG GS lacks the modernity which it possesses on the outside. The overall interior layout has gradually begun to show its age, despite the fact that it comes with all the modern essential features.

The dashboard consists of a very simple looking steering wheel and instrument console combination, along with a slanting layout for the hexagonal themed center console. The center console comes with trapezoidal AC vents on the upper half and a centrally placed touchscreen infotainment system.

The lower portion of the center console, which houses buttons for climate control, looks slightly drab in our opinion. What’s nice about the dashboard is the choice of colors, with a prominent silver line running across the dashboard and the dual tone black and walnut brown theme.

The MG GS, however is packed with many modern features, such as leather upholstery, 6-speaker infotainment system, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, rear AC vents, cruise control and a sunroof.

GS Exterior

To start with, the MG GS is a smart looking crossover, which has got both conventional as well as modern design traits at right places. While its silhouette is more crossover like, there are some design cues which are there on traditional SUVs.

At the front, the MG GS has got a nice sloping pattern for its front grille, which is shaped like a smiley, with a single chrome slat in the middle enhancing its premium appeal. The big headlamps placed adjacent to the front grille comes with projector units within them, while the front bumper houses vertical daytime running LEDs on the outer edges.

The side profile of the MG GS makes it look more like a hatchback on stilts, thanks to the slightly curvy profile and high ground clearance. The machined alloy wheel as well as prominent chrome garnish on the window waistline adds a premium touch to the side profile.

At the rear, the MG GS has a rakish rear windscreen which makes it look quite aerodynamic, however, the rear roof spoiler as well as roof rails make the GS look muscular. To give it a traditional SUV touch, the GS has been adorned with silver finished skid plates at both the front and rear.

MG GS Ride & Handling

The MG GS sits on a monocoque frame and gets Macpherson struts at the front and a multilink at the rear. Riding on large 18-inch wheels, the MG GS is a dynamic SUV to drive, and at the same time, offers a plush ride quality. MG is offering disc brake setup on all the four wheels of the GS.

GS Engine & Fuel Consumption

The MG GS shares its 2.0 liter four cylinder petrol engine with its own stable mate, the MG ZS. However, here, the engine is coupled to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and produces 163PS of maximum power output and 350Nm of peak torque output. The engine channels this power produced to all the four wheels via a 4WD system, which is offered as standard on the top-end Luxury variant.

MG GS Braking & Safety

Apart from the comfort and convenience features, the MG GS has also got a sufficient amount of safety features, such as front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Cornering Brake Control, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, reverse parking sensors with camera and engine immobilizer.

GS Verdict

The MG GS might not give you the levels of modernity in its overall feel, given the steadily rising competition. However, it still has got the quintessential big car appeal in and out, which makes it a good upgrade from an entry-level sedan or a premium hatchback. The GS has got its mechanicals perfect when it comes to performance and driving dynamics.
