Ferrari 812 GTS Expert Review
Abhishek Katariya says
The convertible version of the Ferrari’s flagship supercar, the 812 Superfast, the Ferrari 812 GTS was unveiled in September 2019, and since then, it has been serving as the range-topping convertible supercar from the Italian marquee. The Ferrari 812 GTS is the brand’s first-ever front-engine V12 production convertible car in the last 50 years. The Ferrari 812 GTS is available in the UAE car market with a host of personalization and colour options to choose from.
Interior
Seeking inspiration from its predecessor, the F12 Berlinetta, and the LaFerrari, the cabin of the Ferrari 812 GTS has a minimalist but driver-centric approach, making it a very sporty-looking place. This two-seater cabin of the Ferrari 812 GTS can be customized with one of the several leather and trim choices offered as options.
The flat-bottom multi-functional steering wheel of the Ferrari 812 GTS has a lot of controls mounted on it, including the engine start-stop button and power and drive modes. Behind this steering wheel, the Ferrari 812 GTS gets paddle shifters and a slightly old-school instrument console, which houses an analogue tachometer in the middle with TFT screens on its sides for various information.
Like the GTC4Lusso and Portofino, the Ferrari 812 GTS also lacks a conventional centrally-placed infotainment system, with the centre console here getting rounded AC vents with an aluminium finish around them in the upper housing and physical controls for the dual-zone automatic climate control in the lower housing. The rounded AC vents on the corners of the dashboard also have satin silver aluminium surrounds.
The lowest part of the centre console of the cabin of the Ferrari 812 GTS has vertically aligned rounded controls for various functions. The co-passenger side of the dashboard of the Ferrari 812 GTS has a small nifty screen for the infotainment system, temperature display of the automatic climate control, and other data from the instrument console.
Exterior
Like every other model from Ferrari, the 812 GTS is a drop-dead gorgeous-looking car, which has a lot of curves that make it look timeless and supremely aerodynamic. The Ferrari 812 GTS is being offered as a hard-top convertible as standard with a body-coloured roof that folds down in a matter of seconds.
The sleek and beautiful front end of the Ferrari 812 GTS has long and sleek L-shaped headlamp clusters with LED projectors and daytime running LEDs positioned on the far corners. These headlamps are accompanied by slim air passages affixed to their inner edges. With a central hump running through the middle, the bonnet of the Ferrari 812 GTS also has additional air passages recessed in the outer edges of the central hump. The prancing horse logo of Ferrari sits within a large air dam in the middle of the front bumper, which also comes with air passages on its outer corners.
The curves and aerodynamics level up when the Ferrari 812 GTS is viewed from the side, with this range-topping convertible car having smooth and large-sized curves flowing over its wheel arches. With air passages integrated into the front fender behind the front wheel, the Ferrari 812 GTS is available with a wide variety of 20-inch alloy wheels to choose from.
At the back, the Ferrari 812 GTS gets quad-rounded LED tail lamps positioned behind the humps at the back of both seats, which also serve as the support for the folding roof. The rear profile of the Ferrari 812 GTS also has a body-coloured diffuser and a quad exhaust setup with two pipes on either side. This rear diffuser also comes with active flaps for reducing drag at higher speeds.
Ride & Handling
The Ferrari 812 GTS is the first-ever convertible car from Ferrari to come with an electronic power steering. While the 812 GTS weighs 75 kgs more than the hard-top 812 Superfast due to the folding roof mechanism, the convertible car is as agile and precise to drive with it having the famed Manettino dial and side slip angle control.
Engine & Fuel Consumption
At the heart of the Ferrari 812 GTS is a 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 petrol engine, which is mounted at the front of the car. This mammoth and supremely powerful engine of the Ferrari 812 GTS is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and produces a maximum power output of 800 PS and a peak torque output of 718 Nm. With a claimed top speed of 340 kmph, the Ferrari 812 GTS can achieve the 100 kmph mark from a standstill in 2.9 seconds.
Braking & Safety
The Ferrari 812 GTS has a basic set of features for safety, including dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, rain-sensing wipers, and tyre pressure monitoring control.
Verdict
Like most of the Ferraris, the 812 GTS is all about sheer performance and emotive driving appeal, which pluck your heartstrings directly despite being under-equipped for the price at which it is offered. Besides the massive, powerful V12, Ferrari’s traditional approach to making the driving dynamics precise and focused makes the whole experience of driving the 812 GTS truly magical.
