BMW 2 Series Convertible Expert Review
The smallest convertible model available in BMW’s portfolio, the 2 Series Convertible might be smaller in size and dimensions as compared to other BMW convertibles. But make no mistake, as the compact 2 Series Convertible is high on visual appeal, and at the same time, practicality as well. With no sense of intimidation in its overall feel, the 2 Series Convertible proves out to be a practical convertible for one’s daily usage.
BMW 2 Series Convertible Interior & Features
As expected, everything on the inside feels similar to the 2 Series Coupe, since the 2 Series Convertible is based on the former.
All that means is the 2 Series Convertible comes with a monotonous looking instrument console and the simply styled three-spoke steering wheel. The wide center console is tilted towards the driver and comes integrated with a host of buttons for the infotainment system as well as automatic climate control. The stretched screen for infotainment system is positioned atop of the dashboard, above the rectangular AC vents.
Like the 2 Series Coupe, its convertible version too is being offered in three different trim packages – Luxury, Sport, and M Sport. All these three trim options offer varying upholsteries, detailing and inserts to make one feel special in their own way.
2 Series Convertible Exterior
The BMW 2 Series Convertible, just like any other open-top car, is high on visual drama, but the visual appeal enhances even more due to its compact dimensions, making it look chic and stylish.
The front end styling has been borrowed from the regular 2 Series Coupe. This means that the 2 Series Convertible too has the typical double kidney grille flanked with curvy headlamps which are full LED units. Even the front bumper with LED fog lamps has been lifted off from the regular 2 Series Coupe.
It is from the sides that the 2 Series Convertible looks a bit different. The long and stretched 2-door design has been retained from the 2 Series Coupe, but as the name suggests, the 2 Series Convertible comes with an open-able soft-top roof. There is a sharp crease flowing all the way from the front fender towards the side edge of the tail lamp.
The somewhat bland rear has been carried forward from the 2 Series Coupe, however, the LED inserts in the tail lamps somehow lift up its appeal.
BMW 2 Series Convertible Ride & Handling
As mentioned earlier, the 2 Series Convertible is based on the same platform as that of the 2 Series Coupe, which is compact in terms of dimensions. The suspension setup is the same as that on the 2 Series Coupe, which means that the 2 Series Convertible is an agile car to handle, with certain stiffness in its overall ride quality. The xDrive system, as well as Dynamic Stability Control ensures that the 2 Series Convertible remained stable and sure-footed.
2 Series Convertible Engine & Fuel Consumption
Under the hood too, the 2 Series Convertible is exactly the same car as its coupe version. All the three petrol engine options have been retained from the 2 Series Coupe.
The smallest engine in the entire lineup is the 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol (218i), which pumps out 136 PS of power and 220 Nm of torque. The bigger 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine is tuned in two different states – while the 220i produces 184 PS of power and 290 Nm of torque, the 230i puts up 252 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque. The range-topping 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine gushes out 340 PS of power and 500 Nm of torque.
BMW 2 Series Convertible Braking & Safety
Apart from the mechanicals as well as comfort and convenience features, even the safety equipment list on the 2 Series Convertible is pretty much shared with its coupe version. The 2 Series Convertible comes equipped with six airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, cornering brake control, dynamic traction control and hill start assist.
2 Series Convertible Verdict
The 2 Series Convertible is purely for those who want the fun side of the ‘wind-in-the-hair’ motoring without compromising on the factor of practicality. While its compact dimensions and usable performance make it quite friendly for urban driving conditions, its spirited driving dynamics make it a great entry-level thrill-oriented offering.
