Abarth 595 Expert Review
Abhishek Katariya says
Best described as a sheer pocket rocket, the Abarth 595 is highly regarded as one of the most fun-to-drive hatchbacks currently on sale around the world. The Abarth 595 is based on the Fiat 500 and packs in a shot of performance upgrades, both in terms of visuals and mechanicals. The Abarth 595 available in the UAE market is the Competizione variant, which is offered in colour options like Pista Grey, Campovolo Grey, Gara White, Modena Yellow, Abarth Red, Adrenaline Green, Astailo Grey, Rally Blue, Scorpione Black, Record Grey, and Podio Blue.
Abarth 595 Interior & Features
Step inside the Abarth 595, and you will have mixed opinions about the cabin of the Abarth 595. The all-black cabin with black Alcantara leather upholstery, sports seats, and steering wheel, carbon fibre inserts, and contrast stitching make the Abarth 595 feel properly sporty. However, the slightly dated layout and the lack of features make the cabin of the 595 looks a bit old-school.
The driver’s cockpit of the Abarth 595 features a round-themed multi-functional steering wheel and a single-pod full-TFT instrument console. While the corners of the Alcantara dashboard have rounded AC vents, the centre console comes with vertical AC vents on the sides of the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The lower centre console features old-school buttons for climate control and an integrated panel for the transmission lever on it. The 595 also gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, along with a 6-speaker audio system, paddle shifters, and automatic climate control.
595 Exterior
The Abarth 595 looks the part of a proper performance hot hatch, as it has got the required set of visuals to make it look like one. The car is based on the Fiat 500 but gets a host of visual tweaks, which add a ton of sportiness to the whole cutesy look of the car.
At the front, the Abarth 595 looks cute yet sporty with a tiny horizontal grille, which has a thin black slat with the Abarth logo in the middle. There are two rounded lights on either side of the grille – while the upper ones house the LED projectors, the lower ones houses rounded daytime running LEDs and turn indicators within them. The front bumper looks aggressive with large air dams around the rounded fog lamps and a large air dam in the middle.
The Abarth 595 has a compact footprint, which is evident from the short wheelbase and compact two-door look. The fenders above the rounded wheel arches look slightly flared, while there is a sharp crease running through the fenders and door. The Abarth 595 comes with a gloss black finish for the door handles and rearview mirrors, while a set of 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels come as standard.
At the back, the Abarth 595 has a rakish windscreen and a stubby boot lid with a sharp crease running across it. There are compact trapezoidal tail lamps with rounded edges on the corners, which come with LED inserts within them. The Abarth 595 also comes with a ‘Record Monza’ exhaust system with quad exhaust ports on the rear bumper.
Abarth 595 Ride & Handling
The Abarth 595 comes equipped with a stiffened Koni front and rear suspension setup, which features frequency selective damping (FSD) technology. Riding on 17-inch Corse alloy wheels wrapped with 205/40 R17 tyres, the 595 has been equipped with perforated 305 x 28 mm self-ventilated brake discs at the front and perforated 240 x 11 mm self-ventilated brake discs at the rear, with brake callipers source from Brembo.
595 Engine & Fuel Consumption
Powering the Abarth 595 is a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged T-Jet petrol engine, which is paired to a 6-speed AMT gearbox as standard. This engine claims 165 bhp of maximum power and 250 Nm of maximum torque output and enables the car to cover the 0-100 kmph sprint in 6.7 seconds.
Abarth 595 Braking & Safety
The Abarth 595 has been equipped with basic safety features like front and side airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, electronic stability control and reverse parking sensors and a camera.
595 Verdict
The Abarth 595 might be small in size, but it is high on the character with sporty styling inside-out, a powerful 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine, and a taut chassis. With performance upgrades over the Fiat 500, the Abarth 595 is an immensely fun-to-drive car.
