Volkswagen ID R electric prototype revealed
ABU DHABI: Volkswagen has recently released a series of computer-generated images of their pure-electric car. This electric car is being said to have performance capabilities of modern-day electric drive systems. The car will also act as the beginning for a complete range of electrically powered ID road cars. These cars are scheduled to be produced at Volkswagen’s Zwickau factory in Germany from the end of 2019.
The images which were officially released by Volkswagen shows the electric coupe to be a lot similar to a modern-day Le Mans prototype. Its aerodynamic package includes a sizeable front splitter, a center fin that extends over the rear bodywork, which appears to support the car’s huge rear wing, and a multi-channel diffuser element.
Volkswagen had earlier in October last year stated that they are developing a new car Pikes Peak and now with the release of the images, the company has confirmed it. Volkswagen’s R&D boss, Frank Welsch has stated, “We want to be at the forefront of electromobility with the ID family. Competing in the most famous hill climb in the world with the ID R Pikes Peak not only has symbolic meaning but is also a valuable test for the general development of electric cars.”
Welsch is the one who is in-charge for the development of the upcoming range of ID electric road models and also stated that the ID R Pikes Peak is well equipped with “innovative drive and battery technology”.
The technical details of the ID R Pikes Peak have not been released but it is being expected that the car will be equipped with two electric motors. Each axle in a four-wheel-drive set-up will possess one motor, this is a design pattern similar to the ones being developed for the production versions of the company’s ID Crozz, ID Buzz, and ID Vizzion concept cars. Electricity used to drive the motors is expected to come from a lithium-ion battery. This battery is most likely to use contemporary cell technology similar to the one planned for Volkswagen’s pure-electric road cars.
