Toyota to develop a small sports car in collaboration with Suzuki and Daihatsu
ABU DHABI: Toyota has undertaken an ambitious project to build a new compact sports car that will most likely be positioned below the GT86. It draws inspiration from the S-FR concept that was showcased at the 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon.

The recent report that suggests Starlet’s potential revival has led to additional speculation about the S-FR concept’s production prospects. It's being anticipated that both models could have the same 152hp, 1.3-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine. This will allow Toyota to streamline development costs and research by leveraging the 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine’s smaller variant found in the GR Corolla and GR Yaris hatchback. This would enhance cost efficiency and enable Toyota to offer different performance options.
At the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, Daihatsu unveiled the rear-wheel drive Vision Copen concept. This 3.8-meter-long Daihatsu concept will compete with the Mazda MX-5 and has a similar design and dimensions as the 2015 Toyota S-FR concept. It is also equipped with a 1.3-litre powertrain, although these detailed specifications have not been provided by Daihatsu.
Through this partnership, Suzuki’s front engine-RWD roadster, the Cappuccino, might be revived by leveraging Suzuki and Toyota’s successful rebadging history.
