Toyota GR Supra uncovered
ABU DHABI: After a series of leaks and teasers, finally, the auto marque has unveiled the new-gen A90 GR Supra. The new GR Supra is the first global model to be produced by Toyota Gazoo Racing, an in-house motorsports division of Toyota. The new Supra, a result of the sports collaboration between BMW and Toyota, is based on the BMW Z4.
There is plenty to talk about the new-gen Supra. Starting off with the design, it borrows a lot of things from previously-produced Toyota sports cars. There are round headlamps with LED projectors, split air intakes at the front, faux vents, and more inlets near the front and rear wheels.
Additionally, there are blacked-out A-pillars and double-bubble roof. The rear section is dominated by an integrated boot lid rear spoiler, slim and sleek taillights, a rear diffuser, and twin tailpipes. The side mirrors are placed on the front doors.
Inside the cabin, the Toyota GR Supra gets BMW 3 Series-inspired design, with a chunky-looking electronic gear lever, and tiled interface for the iDrive system. What’s exclusive and Toyota proudly presents is the large 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster with rev counter display in the centre.
Additionally, the cabin comprises of a flat dash, full-width air vents, a three-spoke steering wheel with controls mounted, padded leg bolsters, sports seats with integrated headrests, and an optional head-up central display, which can be chosen between either an 8.8-inch touchscreen or a 6.5-inch.
Dimension-wise, the Toyota GR Supra measures, 4,380 mm x 1,865 mm x 1,295 mm (L X W x H). This makes the sports car longer by 56 mm, wider by just a millimetre and shorter by 9 mm than before. The wheelbase is the same as of the BMW Z4, i.e. 2,470 mm. What’s interesting and worth mentioning here is that the new-gen Supra now sports one of the smallest wheelbase-to-tread ratios of 1.55, which contributes to its agility.
The new Supra is built on the double-jointed chassis, which gets MacPherson struts at the front and multi-link suspension at the back. The sports car gets an optional Adaptive Variable Suspension and rear differential that can be controlled electronically, both of which are tuned to work with the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system.
Powering the new base Supra is the four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that churns out a power of 197 PS at 4,500-6,500 rpm and a torque of 320 Nm between 1,450 to 4,200 rpm. The higher version Supra, powered by the same engine, outputs a max power of 258 PS from 5,000 to 6,500 rpm and a torque of 400 Nm between 1,550 to 4,400 rpm. While the former accelerates from zero to 100 Kmph in 6.5 seconds, the latter does the same in 5.2 seconds.
The top-end Supra variant features the more powerful straight-six 3.0-litre engine that generates a max power of 340 PS at 5,000-6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 500 Nm between 1,600 to 4,500 rpm. This one travels from nought to 100 kmph in just 4.3 seconds. All the engines come mated with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission system.
The company might come up with a manual gearbox in future, considering the market feedback. So, if you are one of those who likes to take the complete control of the car then there is still a ray of hope you can bank on.
As for pricing in the US, the base Toyota GR Supra gets a price tag of USD 49,990 (AED 1,83,620.77) while the 3.0-litre can be purchased at USD 53,990 (AED 1,98,318.77).
There is a limited Launch Edition also available, with 19-inch black alloy wheels and red side door mirrors. This one retails at a whopping price of USD 55,250 (AED 2,02,947.06).
