The next-generation M3 to utilize a petrol engine

ABU DHABI: BMW's next-gen M3 will continue utilizing the 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine named the S58, as it goes through various updates to meet Euro 7 emissions regulations. This indicates the gasoline-powered M3’s continued presence alongside the forthcoming electric variant. Trademark filings have indicated that the name of the electric sports sedan may be iM3, although BMW is planning to change its "i"-based naming scheme.

The electric M3 is based on the Neue Klasse platform and will be available with a distinct drivetrain and chassis, providing buyers with two unique options.

For the next-gen M3 petrol power’s inclusion wasn't part of the original strategy. It was planned to be launched initially as an electric vehicle. However, BMW later considered the fact that many customers have an attachment to their internal combustion engines, especially when it comes to the M lineup. BMW tried to satisfy this demand by keeping the petrol engine available. This decision reflects the commitment of the brand to balancing tradition with innovation, ensuring that car enthusiasts can continue to enjoy the gasoline-powered M3’s thrill.

Both the electric and combustion variants of the seventh-generation M3 will most likely arrive in 2027 or 2028, following the new G50 3 Series launch. However, it is not certain if the next M3 will be available in a Touring wagon version, as with the current generation this body style was introduced.
