Tesla rival, Porsche Taycan EV performance specs revealed
ABU DHABI: Years ago Porsche had promised to deliver a high-performance four-door EV, that not only will maintain their heritage, but also be fit enough to join the rest of the lineup. Hence they marked their foray into the performance EV segment by unveiling the Mission E Concept. The production version of this concept is named, the Taycan and thanks to folks at Porsche we now have the full list of specifications.
First and foremost with any performance car, the sought after thing will always be its power. The Tesla-rivaling electric sedan, Porsche Taycan, will have more than 600 hp via its permanent-magnet synchronous motors that sit on each axle. Torque numbers have not been provided yet, but be assured that it will be pretty high, considering the motor is similar to the one used on the record-setting 919 Evo race car. This will take the car from 0 to 100 kmph in less than 3.5 seconds, while the 0 to 200 mark can be covered under 12 seconds. This performance EV will deliver this amazing performance via the 800V power going through its system.
The main reason to make an EV is to conserve energy, by not using fossil fuels, and instead, use electricity. Hence the travel range is of much importance to these vehicles, and the Taycan stacks a battery with a range of more than 500 km on a full charge. We are not sure if this reading was taken by the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) or the newer Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), but Porsche confirms the same. If the charging station has the right equipment, it can easily recharge up to 80 percent of Taycan’s battery in about 15 minutes.
If rumours are to be believed, Porsche is also planning two lower trims of Taycan making an equivalent of around 500 hp and 400 hp. These two trims will probably have a two-speed automatic transmission with the same all-wheel-drive as standard.
The German automaker wants to produce around 20,000 units of the Taycan per year and might increase it if demand persists. By 2025, Porsche wants its EVs to be at least half of its total sales, and in those, the fully electric vehicles, as well as plug-in hybrids, should be in 50:50 ratio. And Porsche is taking this EV testing very seriously as currently, 40 dedicated specialists are in charge of it. They will cover “over a million kilometres” before the Porsche Taycan makes to the production floor.
