Subaru marks 70 years in the automotive industry

ABU DHABI: 2023 holds great significance for Subaru. It has many new models in the pipeline and is also the brand’s 70th anniversary in the car-making business. 

The Japanese automotive brand’s history and rich Legacy can be traced back to the Aircraft Research Laboratory, which was established in 1917. The laboratory was renamed Nakajima Aircraft Co. Ltd. After a series of reorganisations; the then-Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. was renamed Subaru Corporation on April 1, 2017.

Since its founding, Subaru has expanded into various businesses, with its prime focus on automotive, along with industrial products, aerospace, bus manufacturing, eco-technologies, and prefabricated housing businesses. Today, aerospace and automotive are the pillars of Subaru’s business.

Subaru entered the automotive sector by launching its first vehicle, the Subaru 360, in 1958. Since then, the company has delivered some of the most innovative products, like the Leone, the first mass-produced AWD vehicle in Japan since 1972. Subaru continued its automotive excellence by launching the Legacy, which spearheaded the station wagon boom. Other masterpiece cars in its portfolio include the Subaru BRZ sports car and the Solterra battery-electric SUV. 

Over the years, Subaru has received unwavering customer support by recording cumulative global sales of 5 million Subaru vehicles equipped with EyeSight and cumulative AWD vehicle production of 20 million units.

Subaru entered the aerospace business in 1958 with the release of its first jet plane, the T-1. The company has been strengthening its technologies by participating in international joint and domestic aircraft development programs. Subaru is focusing on three core businesses: commercial programs like the Boeing 787, defence programs, and helicopter programs like the UH-2.

Last month, Subaru introduced a new management team to accelerate its future growth and overcome the era of unexpected changes in the automotive industry.
