Production-ready BMW Skytop Concept poised for limited production

ABU DHABI:  BMW's Skytop concept, unveiled on May 24 at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, could potentially be produced in limited numbers if sufficient interest is expressed by affluent buyers. This Targa-top convertible is based entirely on the M8, with its exterior design drawing inspiration from the Z8 and 503 models, particularly the former, which serves as a prototype for potential production.

During the event, BMW's design director hinted at the possibility of limited production of the Skytop Concept, similar to the 3.0 CSL. Frank van Meel, BMW M CEO, regarded it as a trial and underscored that production would be contingent on high demand.

BMW Group's Design boss stated that around 20 to 25 Skytop examples could potentially be produced, primarily due to the high prices of used Z8s. Although the Z4-based Concept Touring Coupe was previously hinted to undergo limited production, the plan could not be executed.

The Skytop concept boasts a distinctive body design and features a refined kidney grille compared to typical BMWs. Its sleek lines extend to the rear, enhanced by a subtle ducktail spoiler.

Based on the framework of the M8 Competition Cabriolet, the Skytop incorporates a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, delivering approximately 460 kW of power and 750 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels.

It is being speculated that the production could begin in late 2025 or 2026. This indicates the openness of BMW to customer demand for groundbreaking projects.
