Price of A90 Supra to be “acceptable for Toyota fans”, Tetsuya Tada
ABU DHABI: Toyota? Supra? Aren’t those two words very familiar? Boy, they are. The upcoming Supra A90 has been making waves since long. Actually, the word “long” would be an understatement. There have been numerous leaks, sneak peeks, and whatnot! However, there ain’t too much time left before the sports car steps on the podium next month in Detroit. Midst all the sexy images and tasty speculations, we almost forgot about one of the most import aspects, the price. So, how much for the beauty?
In a recent interview, Tetsuya Tada, who is the chief engineer behind the all-new Supra, said that the price of the sports car will be very much “acceptable for Toyota fans”. He also emphasised on the fact that they do not want the new Supra to sell like hot cakes, instead, they’d like the thirst of the loyal fans of the sports car to be quenched. Tada also added, “the goal for a Toyota sports car is not to sell a lot, but to really to sell Supra to fans who like cars a lot”.
Speaking about the immense pressure of the A90 Supra doing well once it hits the markets, Tetsuya Tada said, “The segment for this Supra is very competitive, there are so many other competitors as you know in this segment. So, to compete with that, it has to be so much more fun than its competitors. So, it’s a lot of pressure, and that’s why we have to limit the price as well”.
The chief engineer of the A90 Supra further went on to say, “To index the success of a sports car is really hard. I think that’s why for many of the car companies, it’s really hard to make a sports car. If you can sell more it’s good, but it’s not (a priority) for a sports car”.
The major competitor of the upcoming sports car from the land of rising sun is the new BMW Z4 which costs USD 65,690 (roughly RM 274,518). The price of the Toyota A90 Supra will also be falling near the Z4’s cost. However, for the exact pricing and other details, we have got no other option than waiting patiently until the North American International Auto Show takes place next month in Detroit.
