New Lexus V8 sportscar in the works

ABU DHABI: Lexus is all set to introduce a brand new V8-powered sports car that will succeed its iconic LFA, likely named the LFR. At Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps racing circuit, this new model’s prototype has been seen undergoing rigorous testing sessions. 

The prototype emits a distinctive sound, hinting at the presence of a powerful twin-turbocharged V8 engine, promising exceptional performance similar to its legendary predecessor, the LFA. This underscores Lexus’s commitment to setting a new benchmark in luxury sports car engineering.

The Gazoo Racing motorsport division is expected to prepare the new Lexus V8 sportscar by 2026 for top-tier competition. As per FIA homologation regulations, all GT3 race cars must get their external design from a related road-going model. Because of this regulation, the high-performance sportscar’s adapted version is expected to be released within the next two years. This shift to the street from track underscores the commitment of Lexus to leveraging motorsport expertise for developing performance-oriented road cars.

Although specific details remain undisclosed about the Lexus GT3 racer, GT3 regulations have provided a flexible framework wherein cars should not weigh more than 1300 kilograms and produce between 500 to 600 horsepower. 

Aston Martin, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, BMW, Ferrari, Ford, and Porsche are the leading producers of GT3 customer cars. Lexus’s entry into this esteemed lineup showcases its effort to expand its motorsport footprint and deliver a contender that meets the GT3 racing’s rigorous demands.

By 2026, Gazoo Racing will launch the GT3, following FIA regulations. The upcoming road version will continue the high-performance sports cars legacy like the LC 500, LFA, and RC F.

Without announcing replacements Lexus has discontinued the LC and RC coupés in Europe but remains focused on producing performance vehicles. The upcoming Electrified Sport concept will be produced by the end of the decade. Its carbon fiber monocoque is similar to Toyota's GR GT3 concept. This suggests the chances for production of two related sportscars in the next five years with different powertrains.
