McLaren to unveil P1 successor on October 6

ABU DHABI: A new McLaren hypercar is on the way, anticipated to be the successor to the P1. It will be named the W1 and is expected to make its debut on October 6.

The naming format features a letter that will be followed by the number one, building a connection of the new model to McLaren's F1 and P1, and signifying its position as the ultimate road car lineup of the brand.

The official name of this car has not been revealed yet. Currently, it is being referred to by its code name, P18, which is unlikely to be used in the final production model. However, like its predecessors, the F1 and P1, the new hypercar will have ‘1’ in its name.

While a pure-electric McLaren supercar is currently in the pipeline; the forthcoming ‘1’ hypercar will be equipped with a powerful hybrid powertrain designed to surpass the 916 hp produced by the P1. It will feature a new V8 engine that is completely different from those in the current McLaren lineup, paired with an advanced hybrid system. Its power output is expected to exceed 1,000 hp.

Additional features will include a carbon-fibre tub that has been recently developed, gullwing doors instead of the traditional butterfly doors of McLaren, and styling that is inspired by F1 race cars. Only 400 units will be produced, similar to the P1, which was limited to under 375 units.
