Lucasfilm and Porsche co-designed new starfighter revealed
After working diligently for almost two months, the design teams of Porsche and Lucasfilm presented the new starfighter, named Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter, which will be showcased as a detailed model at the premiere of the upcoming fantasy film, ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ this month in LA.
Created to promote the film, the new starfighter is 5 feet long and uses traditional spaceship design language from the movie series combined with the elements from the 911 sports car and Taycan EV sedan.
Some noticeable elements taken from the Porsche cars include taillights and grille from the 911 that are used in separate locations of the starfighter and Taycan’s new four-point DRLs that can be seen at the rear tip of each engine. The front of the spaceship is similar to the Taycan, with headlights and air inlets combined to be seen as a single entity.
Porsche’s VP of styling, Michael Maur said, "The basic shape of the cabin, which tapers towards the rear, and a highly distinctive topography from the cockpit fly line to the turbines establish visual parallels with the iconic design of the 911 and the Taycan.”
From the inside, the spaceship seems to follow the Porsche design language too. The three-seater layout has one pilot seat in the centre accompanied by two passenger seats at the back. The instrument cluster is positioned right in front of the pilot, just like you’d see in the Porsche cars. The seating position is quite low, again reminiscent of the sporty characteristics of Porsche.
The VP and executive creative director of Lucasfilm, Doug Chiang said, “This collaboration is an amazing opportunity to merge the design aesthetics of Porsche and Star Wars. I found it to be creatively challenging and extremely inspiring.”
You can encounter the amazing, fast-looking, 5-foot long scaled model of the new starfighter at the premiere of the movie in LA. If you are a Star Wars series fan, crazy about automobiles and most importantly in Los Angeles then you can’t afford to miss this grand event.
